Fifth Annual Winter Retreat!
Feb. 13-16, 2009 at Frost Valley YMCA (click for details of the retreat center)

Spend Presidents Day Weekend (February 13-16, 2009) in community with fellow Metro NY District Unitarian Universalist Young Adults at Frost Valley YMCA Camp in Claryville, NY! Stay 3 nights (meals included) in a beautiful 40-person environmentally friendly lodge with a wood-burning fireplace.
Meet new friends, re-connect with old ones, and just relax in the Catskill mountains and enjoy a striking view of the stars. Participate in making arts and crafts, hiking or snow tubing -- to name a few -- or take some time for personal reflection. All meals included, nightly worship lead by a district young adult religious professional, and an open-mic night also in store.

The cost of the retreat will start at $175 for early registrants, will increase to $200 after Dec 1st, and to $250 on Jan 1st. If you consider what you would normally spend for a cross-country ski weekend with hotel, rentals and meals, it's quite a bargain! We are also looking for individuals who might be able to offer scholarship money in excess of their registration to help others attend the retreat. If you are able to give more, please contact the registrar via ConnectUU.
Registration is available now on ConnectUU! Click here to register!

Bridging Ceremony
May 2, 2008 at The Metro NY District Annual Meeting in Stamford, CT.
Come join Youth and Young Adults as we participate in the district's Bridging Ceremony!
The UUA describes bridging thusly:
Bridging ceremonies are worship services that honor the transition from youth to young adulthood, with the emphasis on the new community. They were developed as a response to high school graduation ceremonies, which have come to be known as cliff ceremonies by those who resented being sent off for their tendency to send youth off with little or no support.
Participants, known as bridgers, are typically between the ages of 18 and 20. The central ritual is that of crossing a bridge, symbolizing the transition from youth into the young adult community. Each youth is escorted across the bridge (or across the front of the sanctuary)—usually by a young adult—or in some way welcomed as a new member of the young adult community. Most bridging ceremonies also have a sermon, or some spoken portions, which honor the transition with meaningful thoughts and reflections. These words often challenge bridgers to rise to the challenges that the transition presents. Although these spoken pieces acknowledge the past, they remain focused on the future and promise of Unitarian Universalist community. The third common component of the bridging ceremony is a responsive reading or covenant in which the congregation and/or church leadership honors, welcomes, and pledges to support bridgers in their new stage of life.
You must register for at least the Friday portion of the meeting ($35) to be covered for the Ceremony. Also, be sure to look through the events at the Annual Meeting to see what else might interest you. We're hoping to have a big group at the Annual Meeting to advocate for Young Adults in the district.

Building the Bridge!
March 28-29, 2008 at The UU Congregation at Shelter Rock in Manhasset, NY as well as the ceremony at the Metro District Annual Meeting, in Stamford CT, May 2nd.

The Bridging conference is a Youth and Young Adult conference during which our two communities create a service and ritual to welcome those who are making the transition into Young Adulthood. We encourage all of you to attend and help create this important ritual. This conference will take place at Shelter Rock on March 28-29 (7pm Fri through 3pm Saturday), while the resulting ceremony will take place on May 2nd, at the District Annual Meeting.
In order to attend you need to register for both events separately. There is no cost for the conference for young adults, as long as you register for at least Friday night of the annual meeting. However, we encourage you register for the entire meeting as there will be workshops of interest to young adults on Saturday.
