News from the UU District of Metro NY
 
The District 2007 Annual Meeting will be held April 27-28, 2007, at the Marriott Hotel in Stamford CT. This year's theme is Rich, Warm, and Full: Nurturing Our Congregational LifeThe Rev. Meg Barnhouse will be the special guest on Friday evening; the Rev. Calvin Dame will deliver the keynote address on Saturday. Online registration begins February 15.
Presentation of the 2007 District Awards and the 2007 District Scholarships  will be a highlight of the District 2007 Annual Meeting.The deadline is March 1 for award nominations and scholarship applications.
The District Nominating Committee presents its slate of 2007 nominees Acrobat Reader Required for members of the District Board and members of the District Nominating Committee. Voting will take place at the District 2007 Annual Meeting.
The Rev. Charles Blustein Ortman, minister at the Unitarian Church of Montclair (NJ), is ending his four-year term as the District UUA Trustee at the close of General Assembly 2007 on June 24. The Rev. Rosemary Bray McNatt Acrobat Reader Required, minister at the Fourth Universalist Society (Manhattan), is a candidate for the District UUA Trustee. Election of the new District UUA Trustee will take place at the District 2007 Annual Meeting.

Small Group Ministry: Covenant for the Future Acrobat Reader Required, a workshop sponsored by the District for congregational teams who want to initiate or energize their Small Group Ministry program, will be held February 24 at the Unitarian Church in Westport (CT). The workshop repeats the program held previously in October. The Rev. Calvin Dame and the Rev. Chris Reed will lead the workshop.

Doug Rhodes, member of the UU Congregation of Princeton (NJ), has ended eight years of service as District Ministerial Settlement Representative, having advised 26 congregations in their efforts to find ministers. The Rev. Linda Hansen, minister at the UU Congregation of Danbury (CT), is the new District Ministerial Settlement Representative.
Nearly $23,000 has been received as of February 1 for the Fall 2006 Chalice Lighters Call Acrobat Reader Required to benefit the Gulf Coast UU Fellowship (Gulfport MS) and the UUA-UU Service Committee Gulf Coast Relief Fund in efforts to recover from the ravages of hurricane Katrina. The Spring 2007 Call begins this month for the First Unitarian Society of Plainfield Acrobat Reader Required (NJ) to help the Society implement a marketing campaign, a key component of their membership development plan. Read an update Acrobat Reader Required from Bill and Rickey Slezak, District Chalice Lighters Coordinators.

The first issue of the Annual Program Fund QUARTERLY Acrobat Reader Required newsletter is now available, and First Unitarian Society of Plainfield (NJ) is a featured congregation! The UUA's Department of Stewardship and Development has launched this newsletter to provide information and congregational stories to those involved or interested in the Annual Program Fund.
More than $1,500 was raised for the rebuilding of the UU Congregation at Rock Tavern (NY) at the Benefit Concert hosted by UU Congregation of Central Nassau (Garden City NY) on January 21. Says the Rev. Hope Johnson, "See what we did, how we did it, and why it's a 'win-win!' Poughkeepsie did it. Garden City did it. You can do something like this too . . ." Read more Acrobat Reader Required
Make plans now for General Assembly (GA) 2007 in Portland OR June 20-24!  GA 2007 will be the first time congregational delegates will discuss the purposes of the UUA since the consolidation of the Unitarians and Universalists forty-five years ago. GA 2007 also will incorporate environmentally responsible practices -- the "greening" of GA -- building on the progress made at GA 2006. UU University takes place June 19-20, just before General Assembly 2007 in Portland OR. Gil Rendle, a senior consultant at the Alban Institute and highly acclaimed author and speaker, is the keynote speaker. All current and future lay leaders are welcome and encouraged to attend UU University, dedicated to increasing leaders' abilities to serve their congregations. Convo 2007 is scheduled for May 5-6 Acrobat Reader Required at All Souls UU Church in Bellville OH. Convo, short for Universalist Convocation, is an annual, national gathering of people who have roots in Universalism or who identify as Universalists. The keynote speaker for the event is the Rev. Ron Rembert, chair of the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Wilmington College.

The UU Women's Association (UUWA) held a very successful event on January 20 featuring Laurie James speaking on "Women's Themes in Plays Today - Passion & Perspective" and also included the acting out of scenes from recent plays by women. For information about the UUWA, contact Reena Kondo.
The Gulf Coast Relief Preparation Workshop will be held on February 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Fourth Universalist Society (Manhattan). The Fourth Universalist Society (Manhattan) is the site of a 14-hour trauma response training on February 23-24, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., co-sponsored by UU Trauma Response Ministry and Disaster Chaplaincy Services; www.4thu.org.
The UU Church at Washington Crossing (Titusville NJ) is offering same-sex civil union ceremonies and heterosexual weddings free of charge on February 23-25 and March 2-4, following the legalization of same-sex civil unions in New Jersey on February 19. Read more Acrobat Reader Required.
Community Unitarian Church at White Plains (NY) recognized more than 30 members at a moving Membership Sunday service on January 21 for having signed the church's membership book between 25 and 50 years ago. It was an emotional and inspiring reunion, sparking a spontaneous rendition of Auld Lang Syne. Honorees were each given a certificate of recognition.

The Unitarian Church of Montclair (NJ) Senior Youth Group raised $253 at their Band Jam and donated the entire earnings to AIDS research.
Tao of Aging Mini-Conference Acrobat Reader Required with Rev. Patricia Hoertdoerfer will be an opportunity for you to cultivate the qualities that the world's wisdom traditions have always associated with spiritual maturity: loving kindness, wisdom, generosity, humor, and inner peace. To be held at Murray Grove Retreat and Conference Center, Lanoka Harbor NJ, March 9-11, the mini-conference is limited to 20 individuals/couples ages 50 and older.
The UUA has three new openings on the district staff team: Program Consultant (New Hampshire-Vermont-Northeast districts), Program Consultant (Joseph Priestley District), and District Executive (Ohio-Meadville District). For information on these and other job openings, visit uua.org/hr/openings.
The UUA has established the Reverend Marjorie Bowens-Wheatley Fund to "support UU congregations and their lay and ordained leaders who are committed to the transformative work of creating inclusive multicultural communities of the spirit." The Rev. Bowens-Wheatley passed away on December 10, 2006, from cancer.
Daylight savings time changes! Take note: In previous years, daylight savings time began on the first Sunday in April and ended on the last Sunday in October. But starting in March 2007, daylight savings time will begin on the second Sunday in March and end on the first Sunday in November. On March 11, set your clocks ahead one hour at 2:00 a.m. or you'll be late for the service!
The Internal Revenue Service has launched a free online workshop covering tax issues confronted by small and mid-sized tax-exempt organizations. Stay Exempt: Tax Basics for 501(c)(3)s consists of five interactive modules. Users can complete the modules in any order and repeat them as many times as they like. The online training website does not require registration and its visitors will remain anonymous.
