Youth Advisor
Community Unitarian Church at White Plains

 
Community Unitarian Church at White Plains, NY (suburban New York City) is seeking a dynamic part time youth advisor to cultivate and energize our multifaceted youth-driven program for the congregation’s high school youth. We envision this position as a youth ministry manifested through worship, leadership development, social action, and education and community building.
 
SUMMARY:
The Youth Advisor, in conjunction with the Director of Religious Education (DRE) and Minister, will oversee the spiritual growth and religious education of the youth (10th-12th grades) of our congregation. S/He will work with the DRE to encourage the further development of UU values within our youth and to encourage full participation in UU life at the congregational, district and continental level. The Youth Advisor will seek to uphold the Religious Education Council’s vision of youth programming.
 
RESPONSIBLITIES
 
PROGRAMATIC:
bullet Oversee and advise the CUC youth group on Sunday mornings.
bullet Facilitate twice monthly evening/weekend youth group sessions or events.
bullet Assist youth in planning social, social action, charitable, worship, trips, and fund-raising activities.
bullet Coordinate Fall Youth Group Retreat.
bullet Facilitate Youth Group Parent meetings (Twice per year).
bullet Collaborate with DRE and Minister to plan intergenerational/family worship as needed – encourage youth participation.
bullet Supervise the planning of the annual Youth Sunday Service.
bullet Help to motivate youth/adults to participate in congregational and Metro District activities.
bullet Provide support and guidance to youth as needed. This includes pastoral, lay ministry care and honoring of confidentiality; seeking supervision from DRE and Minister for all concerns.
bullet Assist DRE and Minister in planning “reunion” events for former youth.
bullet Option to preach one sermon during the congregational year.
bullet Attend 2 Metro NY District Youth events with CUC youth.
bullet Provide adult leadership to District Youth events hosted by CUC.
 
VOLUNTEERS:
bullet Recruit and train volunteer youth advisors.
bullet Ensure activities are prepared when absent (maximum of 5 Sundays per year personal or professional).
bullet Hold bi-monthly meetings with volunteer youth advisors.
bullet Recruit additional adult volunteers for trips/carpools/events/etc.
bullet Secure signed Code of Ethics statement of “Safe Congregations” from adult volunteers.
 
ADMINISTRATIVE:
bullet Meet with DRE and Minister once a month.
bullet Meet with DRE twice a month.
bullet Apprise DRE of all plans and occurrences in youth groups.
bullet Attend RE Council meetings every other month to deliver a report covering youth concerns (submit a written report when absent).
bullet Attend CUC Program Council meetings every other month to report on youth focused events happening in the congregation.
bullet Ensure communication of youth programming events through flyers, email, posters, etc.
bullet Write a monthly Youth column for the “Communitarian” newsletter
bullet Keep youth, DRE, Minister and RE Council up to date on Metro NY District offerings.
bullet Coordinate sponsorship and transportation to Metro District youth events.
bullet Secure all youth participating in the program have proper registration and permission slips.
bullet Ensure adequate volunteer supervision per CUC Safe Congregations guidelines (minimum of 2 adults per event).
 
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT and DENOMINATIONAL ACTIVITIES:
bullet Read available literature and research internet resources on youth groups and advisor roles
bullet Attend RE, Metro NY and UUA events/meetings as able.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
bullet Twenty-five years of age or older.
bullet Experience working with youth of high school age, possessing an understanding of human development and adolescent behavior.
bullet Familiarity with the values, principles, and practices of the Unitarian Universalist faith.
bullet Excellent communication in the English language and in written communications including use of the computer.
bullet Good organizational skills.
bullet Ability to facilitate group activities and excellent team-building skills.
bullet Ability to coordinate and support a team of volunteers.
 
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
The Youth Advisor will report to the Director of Religious Education (DRE).
 
HOURS/SALARY:
This is a part-time position averaging 45 hours per month (approximately 11-12 hours per week) beginning mid August and ending mid June. Maximum salary of $7500 plus a budget line for professional expenses.
