Awards

At each District Annual Meeting, awards are presented to outstanding individuals and congregations. Nominations for three awards come from the District Board. For all other awards, nominations are submitted by individual UUs. The deadline for 2010 award nominations is March 15.

Awards Presented to Congregations

MENDON W. SMITH AWARD

The family of the late Mendon W. Smith, a former District Treasurer and Finance Chair, underwrites the presentation of a plaque awarded to a District congregation that has shown outstanding dedication to our UU purposes and principles and to the strengthening of our liberal religious faith. Activities that demonstrate such dedication include leadership development, community outreach, creative programming, and participation in denominational affairs, among others.

PAST AWARD WINNERS

 

O. EUGENE PICKETT AWARD

Named for a former president of the UUA, this award is presented to a congregation that has contributed significantly to the growth of the District. Factors for consideration may include congregational growth, organizing a new congregation, consistency as an Honor Society in support of the UUA's Annual Program Fund and District dues, and participation in District activities. The District Board nominates candidates for this award. The recipient is the District's nominee for the UUA's annual O. Eugene Pickett Award.

Awards Presented to Individuals

WINIFRED LATIMER NORMAN AWARD

Established to honor a past UUA District Trustee, the award is presented to the individual in the District, who best represents the ideals and values exemplified by her in the areas of social action and racial concerns.

UNSUNG UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST AWARD

This award is made to an individual who makes a solid and continuing contribution to the work of her or his congregation or to the District, without consideration of recognition, and is generally not well known throughout the District.

AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN  RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

This award is presented to an individual whose achievements include several of the following: contributed to the quality of religious education at the congregational level, affected more than one congregation, contributed to the  quality of religious education at the District level through leadership and/or  publications, made good advantage of opportunities for continuing professional education, been innovative in the development and/or use of religious  education resources, brought dignity to the profession of religious education.

JUNE Z. GILLESPIE AWARD

This award recognizes an individual who has encouraged congregational participation in denominational affairs and events at the District or national level. Through personal action and encouragement, this individual has developed denominational awareness and support of the denomination within his or her congregation. The District Board nominates candidates for this award.

JERRY DAVIDOFF AWARD FOR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT

Named for the award's first recipient, this award honors an individual who furthers through lifetime accomplishment a greater awareness and understanding, in our congregations and our region, of the potential of Unitarian Universalism to transform individual lives, communities, and the greater world. The District Board nominates candidates for this award.
